Status of Engine LNR - 13 (Custodian - 'Steamer Bill' Smith)

Dated: 29 March 2013
Removed shaft from engine on left side and provided to Dennis Cranston who will inspect machining on shaft, eccentric arms, etc. Also brushed all flues in boiler and cleaned flues and smokebox with air pressure.

Dated: 09 March 2013
Partially dis-assembled running gear on left side to better determine cause of problem. Unable to remove shaft that appears to be causing issue due to not haveing correct wrench.

Attempted to run LNR during HALS Chugga Chugga Chili Fest. Engine fired up well, but would not run more than a foot or so. Put engine back in Steamer Bays and discovered that a roll pin had fallen out of the valve gear on the left side and another one was missing. Replaced roll pins, fired engine again and it ran for about 5 minutes before it stopped again. Discovered that roll pin had come out again. Will look at engine and try to determine cause of problem shortly.

Ran LNR around Phase I as part of the Public Run Day activities. Had an excellent day with cooler than normal temperatures. Engine ran well with lots of good steam. Ran engine approx. 3 1/2 hours. Discovered that Whistle Valve and Upper Sightglass Cock seem to have minor leaks.

Ran LNR around Phase I as part of the Public Run Day activities. Engine was very well received with lots on interest and everybody wanting to hear the whistle. Ran about 2 1/2 hours or so and used a complete tender full of coal and 4 water refills. Engine ran flwlessly with no mechanical issues.

Dated: 12 August 2012
Ran LNR around Phase I for just over an hour and a half. Was finally able to maintain steam pressure and water level during most of the run. It is important to note that I filled the lubricator with Steamer Oil before the run. The engine had a 'squeak' that varied with the speed of the engine. By the end run the noise had stopped and all seemed to be well.

Determined how to set the track up to run Phase I in the 'opposite' direction which is the direction I will run during the upcoming Public Run Day.

All in all a great day...

Rolled engine out of Engine Barn and out to Steamer Bays. General cleaning of engine with Brasso in attempt to improve looks of engine prior to run day. Documented more of the water circuit. Still have some questions with plumbing in tender. Removed Smokebox cover and blew out a small amount of coal dust. All in all it was pretty clean. Need to brush out flues.

Ready to run for Public Run Day next week. Put engine back into Engine Barn.

Dated: 28 July 2012
Rolled engine out of Engine Barn and out to Steamer Bays. Performed initial start-up activiities. Clyde Brown came out to see how I was doing. He had some excellent pointers, which made starting the engine much better. Finally got engine started and up to pressure. Rolled out of the Steamer Bays and immediately ran low on pressure and low on water. Stopped and loaded some more coal and water. Struggled a bit initially but was able to finally get it under control.

Successfully completed five laps around Phase I track. Went to back to the Steamer Bays, blewdown the engine, cleaned it up and rolled back to the Engine Barn. A great morning of Steamin' !!!

Engine was rolled out to steaming bays at HALS. Foolowing procedures being documented by Bill Smith, engine was fired up and allowed to come to maximum operating pressure. Pressure was then increased to point where both Safities lifted at about 120psi. Injector operation was tested and found to be correct. Blowdown process for sight glass was also confirmed. Manual water pump was tested and determined to need a hose clamp which is missing. Engine was moved backward and forward in the steaming bay and seemed to operate properly. Grates were dropped, engine allowed to cool, and engine rolled back into Engine Barn. Test seemed to be totally successful.

Dated: 06 July 2012
Engine was inspected and tool inventory completed. The Stack Tool was determined to be missing. With assistance from Dennins Cranston, a new Stack Tool was made. A couple of other small tools are needed and will be added to tool kit.

Dated: 30 June 2012
Plan is to inspect engine this weekend to inventory tools and other items that are with the engine and to do initial cleaning.
